Some of the UK’s finest venues are in demand and there are reports of 2022 bringing record numbers of marriage requests to some of the country’s museums and art galleries.

We all know that making your wedding day unique is a must for most couples – but what should you consider when choosing a venue with its own history?

Rebecca O’Neill, Events Specialist for National Museums Liverpool, shares her wedding planning tips for choosing the perfect venue.

Being influenced by culture

Consider the stunning decor and consider whether you can use surrounding artwork or exhibits as part of your room’s style or photography backdrop. You can also take inspiration from the history of the building or its collections to create a bespoke menu or theme for the day. Be mindful of the particular nature of the setting, however, as you may need to adapt certain aspects of the day to suit a venue’s event etiquette.

Find an A-lister location

You could walk in the footsteps of history makers. Choose a striking location and you may also find that the building itself has played a prominent role in the past. The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool city centre, for example, has recently become famous in the new The Batman film – which added a touch of modern history to a location that dates back to the 1800s and is the National Gallery of the North. Other historic wedding venues in the area have featured on TV shows like Peaky Blinders and Doctor Who – and you’ll find that venues across the UK have also served as famous film sets.

Feel like a star for the day

Remember, your wedding day is all about you, so don’t be afraid to make yourself the star of the show. Be sure to use the beauty of the architecture to capture precious images of you and your partner. Don’t worry if being center stage isn’t in your nature, as the grandeur of historic spaces can help you feel less overwhelmed by the attention!

Take your guests on tour

Your venue may have a host of interesting stories to tell, so consider sending your wedding guests on a guided tour while you have your wedding photos taken. If you’ve chosen an art gallery or museum, there will be plenty to entertain your family and friends – and make it a wedding they won’t forget.

be adventurous

Never be afraid to be adventurous with your wedding plans. If you’ve chosen a museum as your location, you could have many unique options: a photoshoot with the dinosaurs, talks in front of an aquarium, or a first kiss next to your favorite piece of art. There are many ways to create your own special moment in history.
