Do you wonder if you would be able to succeed in the world of wedding photography? Your location may have a role to play in your success.
A recent survey by Hitched.co.uk looked at the distribution of over 15,000 wedding vendors across the UK in its vendor marketplace. Of all the providers, almost a quarter (24%) were photographers or videographersthe largest category with 3,649 listings on the site.
Since the industry was hit hard by the impact of Covid, spending on photographers and videographers has increased by 4% in the past year, couples spending an average of £1,200 on this service.
Durham City has proven to be the wedding capital of the UK, with an average of 260.72 wedding vendors per 100,000 people listed in the region. That was three times as many as the second region, Greater Manchester, which lists 83.87 wedding vendors per 100,000 people.
As was the trend in the UK, photography and videography was the largest seller category in Durhamwith 35 out of a total of 139 listed wedding vendors offering their creative services.
According to the latest Annual Wedding Survey, the average cost of a wedding in the UK was £17,300, and the venue made up the biggest chunk of a couple’s budget with an average cost of £7,600.
The survey also looked at city-level data to see which UK cities had the most options for couples planning their wedding. Cobham, Surrey had 63 photographers and videographers listed out of a total of 494 providers. Meanwhile, Birmingham showed a dense number of photographers and videographers competing for business with 51 adverts out of a total of 252.
How to Succeed as a Wedding Photographer
Amateur photographer spoke to Rima Barakeh, marriage expert and deputy editor of Hitched.co.uk on what it takes to stand out as a photographer in such a competitive market:
“The best way to break into a condensed market is to increase your visibility to potential consumers, whether by advertising in a market directory, increasing your social media presence, or paying for advertising. somewhere else.
In addition to visibility, it is important to network. Although the wedding industry may seem vast, it is actually quite a tight-knit circuit and by networking with other wedding and professional photographers, you increase the likelihood of a recommendation.
If a photographer is not available to photograph a couple’s date, they will often recommend other photographers. Many wedding venues and vendors also work with a particular circle of wedding vendors and when couples hire their services, they often ask for recommended vendors. The third way to really increase your chances of being a successful wedding photographer seems obvious – but it’s all about the imaging.
Couples will only book you if they like your pictures. Make sure your digital “storefront” showcases the absolute that your business has to offer. »
Wedding photography bounces back after Covid
With so many photographers competing for business, is the industry saturated? Not according to Rima Barakeh:
“Not only have we seen the number of weddings per year increase both before and after the pandemic, but we are now seeing a trend towards ‘consecutive’ weddings – where couples have an intimate ‘legal’ wedding, followed by a more big party for their closest friends and family at another time – meaning there is now potentially twice as much demand as before the pandemic for wedding vendors.
On the contrary, with the industry rebounding as well as it has since before 2020, and with wedding spending up 90%, now would be a great time to get into the wedding industry!
Our annual National Wedding Survey found an increase in spending on wedding photographycouples really spending on the things that are most important to them – in this case, creating (and keeping!) memories of their big day.
People are going to keep getting married, having weddings, and wanting lasting memories of those special occasions. While wedding styles, traditions and trends may change, the desire to want to get married and have a professionally captured day will not.
There’s a reason wedding photography is in such demand; as a large group of boys once said, “Let reason be love”.
